Vaughn chooses UNLV

One of the last major national recruiting pieces fell into place last night as Rashad Vaughn of Golden Valley, Minn. gave his commitment to Dave Rice and the Runnin’ Rebels of UNLV. The 6-foot-6 guard gives the Rebels an immediate game changer from the wing, because of the tools and athleticism that he brings to the floor. We had a first-hand look at the McDonald’s American at the Hoop Hall Classic in Springfield, Mass. in January. Vaughn’s offensive prowess is diversified as he is a threat to attack the rim any time he touches the ball, while also being able to hit the jumper consistently. However, the most impactful part of Vaughn’s game might have been what went unnoticed by the casual fan at Hoop Hall. It was his defense on North Carolina signee, Theo Pinson, which ensured a victory for Findlay Prep over Wesleyan Christian. His ability to be a prolific scorer and also a lock down perimeter defender should make him an impact player in the Mountain West Conference.
Vaughn caps a stunning recruiting class for coach Rice and his program in 2014. Although the Rebels have only garnered three commitments, all three are potential contributors at their position. Vaughn joins two athletic players along the frontline including 6-7 power forward Dwayne Morgan of Baltimore, Md. He is a threat to attack the rim off the dribble while also providing secondary rim protection. Goodluck Okonoboh of Woburn, Mass. will anchor the block with his supreme athleticism for the Runnin’ Rebels. At 6-9 he is a threat to finish above the rim while also being able to run the floor in transition as well as anyone. Look for UNLV to become a threat to become a top 25 program next season assuming that their three leading scorers return for their senior seasons.
