OTR Hoops: Breakout Camp Standouts Part I – August 12, 2024
NORCROSS, Georgia, – On the Radar Hoops hosted the annual Breakout Camp at Norcross High School last weekend. Nearly 100 prospects from around the Southeast trained and competed in front of dozens of media outlets from the Atlanta area. Here is a first look at names that we took note of at the event.
By: Jonathan Hemingway
#191 Nasir Anderson – Norcross High School – 2027
Anderson showed up to the camp ready to compete and played with edge throughout the games. The athletic and powerful guard could not be contained in this setting. He uses a quick first step and a powerful upper body to create his space in traffic. Expect Anderson’s name to trend this high school season and beyond while competing in the House of Blue.
#228 Quentin Clopton – Sandy Creek High School – 2027
We were impressed with the skill that Clopton demonstrated at the camp. He handles and play-makes with the ball in his hands. He even showed he can drain the jumper off a step back move around the arc. Combined with his ability to get to the rim and take contact to finish makes Clopton a candidate to make impact this season with coach Nickerson’s squad.
#229 JohnQuell Garner – McEachern High School – 2028
Garner is a prospect full of promise and skill. He is a wing with size and body control. We watched him work the high post with his long arms and precision footwork. Combined with his ability to take contact and finish in traffic made him one of the top freshmen at the camp. There is plenty of time for Garner to fill out his frame and polish his skills, nevertheless he is on the right trajectory.
#219 Bryson Jatta – Hillgrove High School – 2028
Jatta had himself a day at the Breakout Camp. He heated up at one point with consecutive 3-pointers and then drove past the defense to get to the rim once the defense closed on him. Still a freshman and his profile displaying as a multi-sport athlete, Jatta is primed as a premier athlete in the metro area. He is skilled and athletic, which is a great combination to have.
#243 Quint McGrath – The Mount Vernon School – 2027
McGrath looks to be a kid who will be productive at the high school level for a while. He is a knockdown shooter with size and mobility. He is a perimeter player, but he has the size necessary to battle on the interior if necessary. He even used that size to finish through contact off the dribble. Look coach Reed Dungan to weave McGrath into his gameplan this year at the Mount Vernon School.
#157 Antonio “Case” Presley – Dacula High School – 2028
Presley was another freshman who blended very well with older prospects at the camp. He is an exciting lead guard with long arms and a quick first step. Talented with the ball in his hand, he can shift past defenders with a quick crossover. He is also unselfish. We appreciated how he was willing to pitch the ball out in transition and get others involved. Do not sleep on his ability to shoot the jumper either. He has a high consistent follow through that will keep the defense honest.
#194 Zech Preston – Central Gwinnett High School – 2027
Still only 14 years old, Preston played like he was ready to play against upperclassmen last weekend. A 6-foot-9 forward with long arms and agility, he flashed production and potential. He canned several perimeter jumpers while working the pick and pop action with the point guard. And he proved he can battle defensively near the basket. He needs some time in the weight room, but most of the strength he will gain ought to occur naturally as he gets older and matures.
#249 Kimario Sherman – Norcross High School – 2027
Sherman headlined the camp in terms of height and production. He towered over fellow campers and played with a confidence that is rare to see in a young big man. We did not get an official measurement on Sherman, but he looked to easily have topped the 7-foot mark on the tape. We liked his aggressiveness on the glass and timing to block shots at the rim. It is hard to teach instinct, but Sherman looks to have plenty of that already.
#139 Josh Smith Jr. – Norcross High School – 2027
Smith Jr. caught fire in the opening game of the day when he drained three 3’s in a row. He looked like a bit of a shooting specialist in his time at the camp. However, he proved that he is more than just a shooter. He attacked the lane with aggressiveness in the half court set while also being able to finish consistently in transition.
#175 Justin Wise – North Oconee High School – 2027
Wise brought one of the most unique skill set combinations at the camp. He proved to be a consistent long-range shooter while also being a hyper-aggressive defender. His anticipation skills as a shot blocker got our attention quickly. His range as a defender gives us reason to believe he will be able to defend several positions on the floor. While his shooting gives him an offensive foundation to build upon.
