OTR Hoops: Florida Opening Day 2 Standouts – March 23, 2025

On The Radar Hoops is back in the Sunshine State for The Florida Opening this weekend. We are breaking down some of the top prospects from Sunday.

By: Ross Van De Griek

2026 6-9 PF Ethan Sabec (Team Speights 17U)

The 6-9 power forward was lethal when it came to shooting from behind the arc in a win against North Point Youth. Sabec finished with a game-high 39 points on 11 made 3-pointers and added his strong rebounding ability with his frame and length to his advantage.

2026 5-9 PG Toby Lane (Team Speights 17U)

The 5-9 junior point guard known as “The General” continued to be a pest for opposing ball-handlers making havoc whether he was guarding on the ball or in the passing lanes. His disruptiveness continues to be a problem where he can make a college coach attract him. Offensively, he is a capable facilitator who makes unselfish plays and does what it takes to win. Lane is very coachable on the floor, and he gets his teammates involved on numerous occasions.

2027 5-10 PG Messiah Borders (Team Speights 16U Red)

The 5-10 sophomore point guard has a quick and shifty handle on the offensive end where he doesn’t get phased when defenses apply pressure on him. Borders brought his high IQ and accurate passing abilities where he found the open shooters whether it was on kick-outs or on the swing pass. Borders has a high ceiling as the spring continues to roll on, he will get noticed by college coaches.

2026 6-3 PG Sam Powell (Team Speights 17U)

The 6-3 junior guard brought a good combination skillset using his length, size, and speed to his game on the offensive end, where he was able to score on all three levels. On the defensive end, Powell applied constant pressure, making it difficult for opposing guards where he used his length to disrupt the passing lanes.

2026 6-2 PG John Delva (Daily Grind 17U)

The 6-2 junior point guard was ultra-aggressive on the offensive end, and he was unafraid when it came to finishing through contact. Delva was also very unselfish when it came to making the right plays as well as finding his teammates in stride.

2027 6-2 PG Willie Brooks (Tre Mann Elite 16U)

The 6-2 sophomore point guard was very effective off the catch as well as off the bounce in their win over Filling The Lane. On the offensive end, Brooks also showcased his confidence when it came to shooting from the perimeter. Look for Brooks to make a lot of noise this spring and summer as he heads into his junior season.

2025 6-4 CG Payton Waites (E5 Florida)

The 6-4 senior combo guard remains unsigned, but he showed a ton of potential where he was able to control the game at his own pace. Waites was very patient on the offensive end and didn’t force any tough shots. On the defensive end, Waites was able to guard multiple positions with his length and athleticism forcing the opposing guards into taking tough shots.

2026 6-0 PG Isaiah Newson (Warriors Elite 17U)

The 6-0 junior point guard is a crafty and bonafide three-level scorer on the offensive end whether it was off the catch or bounce. On the defensive end, he was very active when it came to applying pressure in the passing lanes or being a rim protector by using his athleticism. Newson will be a major prospect as the spring and summer roll on where he could receive some heavy interest from mid-major D1 schools heading into his senior season.
