OTR Hoops: Freshman U Standouts – October 7, 2024

HIRAM, Georgia, – Donte Medlock hosted the annual Freshmen U camp at Hiram High School this weekend. Eighty freshmen, mostly from within the state of Georgia, and a few from in the Southeast region, came to train, learn, and compete at this weekend’s camp. Here is a look at a few prospects we expect to hear more from as the get older.

By: Jonathan Hemingway

Timothy Woodson Jr. – Carver-Columbus – 2028

Woodson made his case for top playmaker at the event. He is confident and smooth with the ball in his hands. He can dictate tempo and force the defense to be reactionary to his moves. He has an advanced ability at finishing at the rim as well. Whether it is finishing with both hands at odd angles or launching off an off foot, defenders have a hard time of keeping him off the scoreboard.

Kaleb Allen – T.L. Hanna (SC) – 2028

Allen was a headliner talent coming into this event and he lived up to the expectations. He is a terrific athlete with a skill set to match. We took note of his all-around skill at the camp. He can handle and lead the break. He is also confident with his jumper. All these attributes lead us to believe he will be a top prospect in the Palmetto State very soon.

Caleb Robbins – Harrison High School – 2028

Robbins built upon his reputation that he earned while playing on the OTR circuit this spring. He is a point guard with moxie and a silky skill set. We like his ability to squirm through defenders and find his spot for a jumper or dump off to a cutting teammate.

William Pass – Chapel Hill High School – 2028

Pass is one of those players that you want on your roster. He is going to make plays, and he is going to help you win games. He can play all the backcourt positions, and he can work the glass as a rebounder. His physical profile will always allow him to be a contributor. Yet it is too early to predict what his given specialty will be in future years.

Isaac Sowemimo – Harrison High School – 2028

Sowemimo was one of the more unique prospects at the camp. He is a kid with length and range as a defender. He can step out into the passing lanes and disrupt. At the same time, he can get in and battle for rebounds in the paint. Add in his ball skill and ability to create moving downhill and he has the profile of a player who is tailormade for this era of basketball.

Mason Pridgett – Milton High School – 2028

Pridgett is one of the more talented guards who suited up for the camp last weekend. He is a slick ball handler who can get the defense leaning the wrong way and exploit an overreach. We expect him to grow into a reliable ball handler who can play make for himself and others at this level.

Jerome McClain – Sandy Creek – 2028

McClain is a physically gifted player who left a positive impression at the camp. He brings length, footwork, and versatility to the floor. He is a kid that ought to impact on the front line quickly. However, there is the potential for him to blossom into a hi-lo player who can face and attack around the arc.

Brice Jatta – Hillgrove High School – 2028

Jatta came to the camp ready to work and dominate the competition. It would be hard-pressed to find another player who impacted the game more on BOTH ends of the floor than Jatta. He swatted shots as a weakside defender and led the break as a handler. This high energy performer has the skill and the will to turn the tide of a game.

Haven McMiller – Tift County – 2028

McMiller is a springy forward with length and a high athletic ceiling. He caught our eye with his timing on the offensive glass and ability to make the second jump when pursuing a rebound quickly. There are aspects of his game that are still undefined, but the physicality and instincts are there.

Justin Mitchell – East Coweta High School – 2028

Mitchell proved to be one of the best handlers and creators at the camp. He uses his athleticism along with court sense to impose his will upon the game. He ended the camp on a high note scoring buckets and turning the momentum in his favor.
