OTR Hoops News: 5-star Power Forward Caleb Gaskins commits to Miami
By: Ross Van De Griek
Caleb Gaskins, A 6-9 power forward from Christopher Columbus High School in Miami, Florida, has announced he will play his collegiate basketball career at the University of Miami, he announced on CBS Sports HQ.
Gaskins chose the Hurricanes over two Southeastern Conference (SEC) finalists, Florida and Texas A&M. Gaskins also held offers from Alabama, Baylor, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Indiana, and several others.
Gaskins has elite footwork for his size and doesn’t seem to get rattled on the offensive end when it comes to his high-arcing shot, which comes with a nice mid-range game. He is an elite passer who can find his teammates off the bounce as well as the catch. On the defensive end, his length, where he has a wingspan of 7 feet and frame, allows him to defend multiple positions, whether it’s altering shots at the front of the rim or being active in the passing lanes. He is also a high-percentage rebounder, where his handle allows him to be effective in transition as well as finishing put-backs. He is gradually becoming more comfortable when it comes to expanding his offensive threat into shooting from the perimeter, where he shot just under 30% last season.
During the Grassroots circuit, Gaskins played with Nightrydas Elite, which is a part of the Nike EYBL Circuit, where he averaged 16.8 points, 8.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.3 blocks per game.
During his junior season at Columbus, Gaskins averaged 13.6 points and 6.3 rebounds per game while playing alongside Cameron and Cayden Boozer, who are currently at Duke University.
Gaskins will be reunited with his high school coach, Andrew Moran, who left the Explorers after winning their fourth consecutive state championship and first Chipotle Nationals Championship in school history, to be a part of Jai Lucas’ staff as his top assistant as well as the school’s recruiting coordinator.
