MORE FROM OTR
Scoring gets the headlines, but this spring on the OTR Circuit, some of the most valuable players were the ones doing the dirty work on the defensive end. These 17U defensive standouts brought athleticism, length, quickness, and instincts. They disrupted ball handlers, protected the rim, and changed games without ever needing the ball in their hands.
We collected these quotes and scouting notes directly from their coaches and OTR scouts. Here are the top defenders we saw this spring, grouped by their defensive roles and skill sets.
Rim Protectors & Paint Anchors
Bigs who control the glass, alter shots at the rim, and make the paint a no-go zone.

Tim Johnson – 6'10" C Sewer South
“First thing that comes to mind is Tim is lanky and that wingspan of almost 7-feet. His defensive impact is felt possession after possession because of his ability to contest shots, alter shots he doesn’t block, and he finishes the defense with rebounding.” – Joel Hillsman
Zech Preston – 6'10" C Georgia Canes
“Zech’s biggest leap has come on the defensive end. At 6’10”, he’s become an elite rim protector and relentless rebounder. He changes shots, controls the paint, and gives us second chances with his work on the glass. His impact goes far beyond the stat sheet.” – Coach Donte Medlock
Aaron Edwards Dunkley – 6'7" PF Beach Boys Elite OTR
“6’7 shot blocker averages double digit rebounds good on his feet and runs the floor very well.” – Coach Bailey
Perimeter Lockdown Defenders
Guards and wings who take pride in shutting down the opponent’s best player on the ball, often full court.

Nasir Mergan – 6'3" G Atlanta Panthers OTR
“Based on my observations the past 2 varsity seasons, and aau spring/summer sessions, Nasir has to be considered on the top defensive players in the 2027 class. His technique is flawless; he plays with great tenacity… We feel that he is a defensive guy that has to be game planned against.” – Coach Winston Smoak

MarTaiveis Rice – 6'4" Wing Gold Elite OTR
“MarTavis is an exceptional on ball defender and rim protector for his position! Rice has shown that he is one of the best two-way players on the circuit!” – Coach JaQuez Motley

Fernando George III – 5'11" G Thunder Select OTR
“As a lockdown defender he stays in front of his man and enjoys taking in the challenge… You don’t want to be on the islands with him up top trying to bring the ball up.” – Coach Fernando George II

Jason Smith – 6'1" G Elite Playmakers 17U (SMITH)
“Jason is a lockdown defender because he takes pride in stopping the other team’s best player. Jason’s mentality for defense is an art and love for the game of basketball.” – Coach Dereikus Smith
Rydrell Lundy – 6' PG Only1Elite
“He’s my best defender because of his high-level IQ. He reads and reacts extremely well, is athletic enough to stay with and contest most opponents and brings very good perimeter defense.” – Coach Riggs
Full-Court Disruptors & Pressure Guards
Quick, pesky guards who create chaos with ball pressure, passing-lane steals, and relentless motor.

Cory McPherson – 6' PG Sunshine Elite
“Cory is one of the most elite defenders that have come through our program. He is a gnat on defense, he pressures the ball full court, turning defenders and trying to speed up opposing guards. Off the ball Cory has an Elite ability to play passing lanes… Cory is an immediate game changer from the moment he walks on the court.” – John Elgani
“Cory McPherson has a strong knack for jumping passing lanes and getting timely rebounds, leading to transition scoring opportunities.” – Ross Van De Griek
Nick High – 5'10" G Griffin Grasshoppers Elite
“Hands down the team’s best defender averaging 3.1 steals per game.” – Coach Duck Richards

Gavin Vause – 5'11" G Warriors Life Elite 2027
Quick guard who is a tough on ball defender and gets into the passing lanes.
Versatile Wings & Help-Side Defenders
Athletic forwards and wings who guard multiple positions, rebound, and excel in team defense — especially with strong help-side instincts and physicality at the point of contact.

Edmund Dantes – 6'4" F Warner Robins All Stars OTR

“Franklin Jordan is our energy guy — you never know if he’s going to come up with a block or a steal, but he’s guaranteed to make something happen. He can guard 1 through 4 and he’s quick on his feet. Kevin is another strong defensive player who can also guard 1-4. He’s a very good on-ball defender who hunts steals. Both are vocal defenders and bring great leadership on that end.” – Coach Jacorey Harper

Jackson Reed – 6'7" Wing-Forward – Charlotte Aces (2028)
