Malik Olajuwon, A 6-foot-5 shooting guard out of IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, announced he has committed to Southern Methodist University (SMU) on Thursday. He is the son of 18-year National Basketball Association (NBA) veteran Hakeem Olajuwon, who spent most of his career with the Houston Rockets before finishing his career as a Toronto Raptor.

Olajuwon chose the Mustangs over Auburn, Kansas State, Minnesota, Texas Tech, and Virginia Tech. He also had offers from TCU, Wake Forest, West Virginia, UNLV, and several others. He had future official visits scheduled with the Wildcats (October 16) and Hokies (October 23), but with his commitment to SMU earlier in the day, those visits are looking unlikely.

Olajuwon is currently ranked as the No. 66 overall player in the nation, the No. 4 ranked shooting guard, and the No. 15 overall ranked player in the state of Florida in the class of 2027, according to 247Sports.

Olajuwon becomes the first commit for Andy Enfield and the SMU Mustangs in the upcoming recruiting cycle.

Olajuwon spent the Grassroots season playing for JL3 Elite on the Nike EYBL circuit, where he averaged 12.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game in 20 league games. He also shot nearly 41% from behind the three-point line during the July live period, according to Cerebro Sports analytics.

During his junior season at Fort Bends Clements in Texas, Olajuwon averaged 21.7 points, 7.1 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 43% from the field and 28% from the three-point line, according to MaxPreps. The Rangers finished the 2025-2026 season with a 19-11 record and reached the UIL Texas District Playoffs.

His father (Hakeem) was a 12-time National Basketball Association (NBA) All-Star and won two championships with the Houston Rockets in 1994 and 1995. He also won the Collegiate Player of the Year in 1983 with the University of Houston, which finished as the national runner-up, falling to North Carolina State.

His older brother (Aziz) also played his senior season at IMG Academy during the 2025-2026 season before moving on to play his collegiate career at Stanford.

Scouting Report on Malik Olajuwon: Olajuwon is a floor spacer who has developed into a versatile role where he can make an impact offensively both on and off the ball. He is a vital threat who can score on all three levels in catch-and-shoot situations. On the defensive end, he can guard multiple positions with his speed and length. He is an excellent and mobile rebounder, as he is unafraid when it comes to challenging shots at the rim and pushing the tempo in transition-scoring opportunities.
