On Monday morning, I stopped by Grayson High School to watch their guys get some work in. 

As has been the case throughout the 2020s, the Rams project to be among the most talented teams in the state. With two top-100 players in the backcourt, Grayson will have the ball in its best players’ hands more often than not. 

2027 MJ Curry is one of the most explosive transition players in the country with elite positional size and athleticism. His jumper keeps making progress too. When his shot is falling, he’s as difficult to stop as anyone. 

Sophomore guard Austin Leonard plays a polished, mistake-free game. Already popping up in the upper tier of national prospects in the 2029 class, Leonard will be able to add to his resume with a good winter. He’s gotten bigger since he last suited up for Grayson, which will help him through the rigors of the season. 

Senior transfer Xavier Butler brings versatility to the team. At around 6-foot-7, Butler is an impact both inside and out. He can stretch the floor, make plays from the wing, or he can make plays in the paint if they need him to. 

Butler will be able to play on the wing plenty because the Rams have two solid frontcourt players. 

Byron Lee packs a punch down low with his assertive athleticism. Between him and Curry, the Rams have to dunk-everything players who’ll undoubtedly generate some highlights throughout the season. Lee’s one of the state’s best available forwards. 

Sophomore JaCori Thompson has plenty of upside as a skilled 6-foot-8 forward who has good touch and can step out and shoot it. He has good footwork around the post too. When he starts adding more aggression around the basket, his game will take steps forward. 

Junior guard Bleu Lewis had an impressive offseason. He has a great feel for the game and a good IQ. He should see plenty of time at the PG spot throughout the season. 

Similarly, 2029 G Jeremiah Anderson brings additional backcourt depth. He’s athletic and has defensive upside with positional size and length. 

A pair of freshmen in Isaiah Robinson and Messiah Lancaster will be able to contribute throughout the season. They’re a pair of talented and promising guards who’ll be able to make an impact while learning and adjusting to this level. 

They have high-end talent and good depth. Grayson should be in the discussion as one of the three or four favorites to win 7A.
