OTR Hoops News: Five-star Combo Guard commits to Texas
By: Ross Van De Griek
On Monday afternoon, 6-foot-5 five-star combo guard Austin Goosby made his commitment to the University of Texas on the CBS Sports HQ channel.
Goosby, a native of Melissa, Texas, located nearly an hour north of the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and attends Melissa High School, becomes the latest commit to join Sean Miller and the Texas Longhorns. Goosby chose the Longhorns over Baylor, BYU, Duke, Miami, SMU, UCLA, and several others. He also held offers from Florida State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State, among others.
Goosby has some familiar ties with the Longhorns as his older brother (Trevor) is currently an offensive lineman on their football program, who are ranked inside the latest Top 10 in the AP Top 25 poll.
Goosby becomes the fourth commit in the upcoming recruiting cycle as he joins center Coleman Elkins, four-star small forward Bo Ogden, and four-star combo guard Joe Sterling.
Goosby is a big guard who plays with incredible length, as he has a wingspan that reaches 6 feet 9 inches. He is a dynamic athlete who can play multiple positions on both ends of the floor. He moves exceptionally well for his size, with and without the basketball in his hands, and has a strong IQ, which allows him to make great decisions. On the defensive end, he is very active when it comes to playing the passing lanes (Averaged 1.6 steals per game) and using his length to his advantage, where he can get timely blocks (Averaged 1.3 blocks per game last season) and rebounds.
During the summer, Goosby played for Drive Nation on the Nike EYBL Circuit, averaging 16.0 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.7 steals per game while shooting 47.2% from the field.
