The Grass is Greener Over the Sewer

In 1976, author Erma Bombeck published a bestselling book entitled “The Grass is Always Greener Over the Septic Tank.” Bombeck’s book has nothing to do with basketball. However, she does highlight how the ideal of greener grass is often tied to unpleasant realities. As it relates to grass, the nutrient-rich waste of the septic tank makes for lush green grass. In the case of basketball players, the highlights and offers are only possible after hours of sweat and work in the gym. Sewer South lives this reality every year. The wins and the success are in the public eye. But the hard work, sweat, and the grime of training are hidden from view.

Coach Spencer Dixon embraces the reality of hard work paying off. He told On the Radar Hoops the vision behind the club. “I had a vision and a story that not everyone can relate to. But I know some people can. I wanted to start something new and fresh. I felt a Sewer South program could go a lot further.”

Dixon tells how Sewer South was previously connected with another program, but the time came to start their own thing. Hitting the ground running in 2024, they have helped 100% of their players get to college to play basketball. Dixon says, “That is a trend that not many programs can say. We are trying our best to continue that.”

Here to Stay

Dixon talks about how there is a lot of excitement around the program and new talent coming in. He is quick to point out the overarching goal of the program. “We are excited about developing these kids on the court, but most importantly we want to help them become successful young men.”

Sewer South is a respected brand on the OTR Circuit. College coaches consistently track their teams throughout the live period events. Dixon believes that the media attention and strategic matchups have been key in Sewer’s rise in prominence. He explains, “Shun and Tai make sure we are on the right courts playing the right competition every weekend. The media is always present, and my guys have benefited tremendously from it!”
