Kameron Mercer, the No. 16-overall ranked prospect in the Class of 2028, announced his commitment to the University of Cincinnati. He announced on ESPN’s SportsCenter on Thursday afternoon. He also attends to re-class into the upcoming senior class, where he will keep his status of being a Top 20-ranked prospect in the nation.
Mercer recently moved back to his hometown of Cincinnati, where he is finishing his high school career at Princeton High School, where he helped lead the Vikings to a 25-3 record and win the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Division 1 State Championship this past season.
Mercer held nearly two dozen offers and chose the Bearcats over Missouri, NC State, Ohio State, UCF, and several others. He took unofficial visits to Kentucky, Louisville, and Ohio State throughout the spring. He also held offers from Florida State, Georgia State, Louisville, Maryland, Villanova, and Xavier.
During his sophomore season with the Vikings, Mercer averaged 14.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 2.4 steals per game. Last summer, Mercer participated on the Team USA U16 National Team, where he helped lead the Americans to a Gold Medal coming off the bench and averaging nearly six points per game, three rebounds, and two assists as well. He also won the Nike EYBL Peach Jam playing with Indy Gym Rats, where he averaged 11.6 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game while playing with the 16U age division.
Throughout his recruitment process, Mercer kept a close relationship with Jerrod Calhoun, who is the head coach of the University of Cincinnati men’s basketball program.
Mercer is a big-bodied wing who plays with a ton of length and has a multi-versatile skillset that plays with physicality, skill, and a high basketball IQ. On the offensive end, he brings a strong scoring game where he can score on all three levels and is able to finish at the front of the rim while absorbing contact. Alongside his ability to score on all three levels, Mercer can be a vital playmaker where he draws multiple defenders when finishing at the point of attack and dishing out strong passes to get his teammates involved. On the defensive end, Mercer’s length and quickness allow him to guard multiple positions, whether it’s guarding the ball or attacking the passing gaps. With continued development, Mercer could be a vital two-way playmaker for the Bearcats in a couple of years.
