Player Spotlight

The recruitment of 7-foot center Josh Sharma of Lexington, Mass. is taking off in recent months. In March, University of Illinois head coach John Groce and his assistant flew in to watch Sharma’s Northfield-Mt. Hermon School lose in their season finale to Brewster Academy. Most recently, Sharma met with coach Bo Ryan of Wisconsin who has an offer in place for some time now. Within the past two weeks the junior spoke to coaches from Creighton, Connecticut, Duke, Georgetown, Wake Forest, Virginia, while also receiving an offer from Gonzaga last evening.

So why is there such a buzz about Sharma? We saw Sharma at the Hoop Hall Classic in January and saw firsthand the talents that this big man has. He has skills reminiscent of former University of Illinois standout and current Portland Trail Blazers post player, Meyers Leonard.  He has the athleticism to score above the rim, while also being able to stretch the defense to the arc with his jumper. Bo Ryan at Wisconsin would love to replicate the success he has had with Frank Kaminsky with Sharma in the future. Sharma fits the mold of a “Wisconsin big man” who possesses footwork and soft touch around the rim, while also being able to step away from the bucket and score. Sharma’s recruitment is sure to heat up until he ultimately makes a decision or narrows his list.
