USA Basketball Mini-Camp Evaluation: James Blackmon Jr.

Blackmon Jr. was originally committed to Indiana though he is now back on the board. He has not ruled the Hoosiers out. That said we ran into Blackmon Jr. and his family at Big Blue Madness on the campus of Kentucky this past weekend. He also lists Michigan as a possible college destination and is slated to make an early decision.

Blackmon Jr. is a solid guard capable of playing on or off the ball in a setting filled with some of the nation’s top talent. He scored it at will off of the bounce knocking down a couple of right-handed floaters in traffic. His primary specialty is his ability to bring energy defending on the basketball. Blackmon Jr. was consistent with his defensive intensity on both days. His explosion and athleticism were also positives for him here in Colorado Springs. Though his jump shot wasn’t falling as consistently as his mechanics would suggest that it should, it is obvious that he has spent time with his dad and high school coach, James Blackmon Sr., perfecting his shooting stroke.
