#OTRHoopsReport: “Prospect Eval” Rakim Lubin – Oct. 29, 2013

Rakim Lubin of Buford, Ga., made major noise when he verbally committed to UConn after missing last summer with a back issue.

The 6-foot-8 class of 2014 power forward transferred from Gadsden City HS in Ala., to Buford (Ga.) High after the end of his junior season. OnTheRadarHoops.com publisher Shun Williams said that multiple schools watched Lubin workout this fall including the Huskies, Marquette and Houston all on the same day. We stopped by the gym during the four-star prospect’s first practice with Buford on Monday night.

Lubin is an impressive prospect who is built like a major college defensive end. His build puts us in the mind of a younger Kenneth Faried. The Buford coaching staff reported that he bench pressed 285 multiple times in the weight room last week. As Lubin rounds back into game shape, UConn fans can expect a post option with the skill to face the basket at times in addition to helping control the boards.

In this class, Lubin’s game is similar to Phil Cofer of Fayetteville, Ga., who will attend Tennessee starting next summer. At 255 pounds, Lubin is bigger than Cofer but their games have distinct similarities given their ability to rebound and finish around the basket. A right-handed shooter, Lubin showed nice touch at the free throw line during the practice making seven in a row at one point. He even showed a nice right to left crossover move to leave an opposing post defender in his dust as he finished at the rim. He’s definitely a potential steal for Kevin Ollie and his staff as they continue the march back to national prominence in Storrs.
