A Vision of Contribution and Growth

PSB Charlotte was founded with the purpose of bringing professionalism to youth basketball. Examples of teams and programs prioritizing quick exposure over preparation are well documented. Stories of players jumping from teams over the course of weekends are told every year. Rankings, shoe circuits, and the allure of instantaneous recognition pull players and parents to a place of instability.

Chief Operating Officer for Pro Skills Basketball, Chris Goodrum, says that this program was built with a different intention.

“PSB Charlotte HS Elite is designed to prepare players for longevity at the next level. Not just the arrival. We develop players’ skills and on court IQ by teaching them how to work, practice, and compete.”

PSB Charlotte provides proof of concept that could be the model for other grassroots organizations that want to develop the entire athlete more than just attaining status on a rankings website. Goodrum adds that the yardstick for success is more than making it to the collegiate level.

“We measure success by sustainability, contribution, and growth – not just commitments.”

In addition to nearly 160 alumni playing at the collegiate level, many of those players boast 3-to-5-year college careers with ten alumni moving on to have professional careers overseas and stateside. Goodrum continues, noting that, “Our guys have consistent retention and contribution at the next level. Some have served as team captains while others have earned all-conference honors.”

Preparing Like a Professional

Basketball is full of uncertainty. Outcomes of the game itself can surprise odds makers and bettors alike. But the world outside of the gymnasium is even more unpredictable than the game itself. Predicting where a middle school basketball prospect will go to college can be as reliable as having your future foretold by a fortune teller.

Rather than making promises for quick exposure, PSB Charlotte Elite focuses on different virtues. Goodrum explains, “We promise a strong, honest, and trusted process, not guaranteed outcomes.”

PSB Charlotte HS Elite attracts the type of player who is willing to be coached and work to become a complete player. The emphasis within the program is on teaching and making solid decisions in-game. Focusing on these values is what Goodrum describes as, “building habits that translate to the college game.”

While many within the world of grassroots basketball focus on the individual, PSB Charlotte HS Elite takes a throwback approach. Goodrum says, “PSB Charlotte believes systems should be the star – not individuals. Our focus is on development, accountability, and trust with families.”

Growth on and off the court continues to be the focus for the leaders of PSB Charlotte HS Elite. The organization communicates that basketball is the vehicle for growth on and off the court. That is what sustains the program’s continued success.

A Model that Works for the Future

There is no indication that the PSB Charlotte will slow down. Goodrum says that there is continued excitement for the program. He explains, “We are excited to help more players find the right college fit, not just the biggest name. And we do this by integrating development, team play, and recruiting education to our players and parents.”

Playing meaningful games is a key part of the formula for PSB Charlotte HS Elite. Goodrum goes on to say, “We want environments that reward preparation, discipline, and basketball IQ. On the Radar Hoops events align with our goals, because it provides high-level and organized competition.”
