The Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) boys’ basketball state championships officially get underway this week with the smaller classifications taking the stage at UNF Arena in Jacksonville, Florida. Here is a preview of the 3A semifinals that are scheduled to take place on Monday:
University School (Fort Lauderdale) vs. Calvary Christian Academy (Fort Lauderdale)- Monday, March 9 at 3:00 p.m.
These two schools are 15 miles apart and will make a six-hour drive on Interstate 95 towards Jacksonville, where both programs are coming into Monday’s semifinal matchup with the goal of a state championship.
The University School Sharks (23-5) return to the Final Four for the first time since winning the state title in 2019, under Hall-of-Fame head coach Jim Carr. The Sharks are led by 7 th -year head coach Ron Oliver and come into Monday’s semifinal matchup against crosstown foe Calvary Christian Academy on a five-game winning streak, dating back to January 31, when they lost the regular season finale to Sagemont, which is representing in the Class 1A Final Four. The Sharks are led by 6-foot-6 senior guard Sean Jones, 6-foot-8 junior combo forward Ahmed Mustapha, and 6-foot-2 sophomore point guard Justin Rhoades.
On the other side, the Calvary Christian Academy Eagles (22-1) roar into the Final Four on a 14-game winning streak, dating back to December 19 when they lost to Paul VI (Virginia) in the City of Palms Classic. The Eagles also come into play ranked No. 2 in the nation, according to MaxPreps and No. 1 overall in the state of Florida. Out of the 14 consecutive wins, eight of the wins have come by 20 or more points, dating back to January 16, when they competed at the Bass Pro Shops Tournament of Champions in Missouri. The Eagles are led by 6-foot-1 junior guard Cayden Daughtry, 6-foot-7 junior small forward Aiden Bolden, 6-foot junior guard Jacob Zhu, and 6-foot-5 senior wing Kenneth Francis Jr.
Andrew Jackson (Jacksonville) vs. The Villages Charter - Monday, March 9 at 7:00 p.m.
The Andrew Jackson Tigers (28-1) return to the Final Four for the third consecutive year, as well as making their seventh appearance in the last eight years, and come into Monday’s semifinal matchup with The Villages Charter on a 19-game winning streak, dating back to December 16 when they lost to Impact Christian Academy, who is representing in the 1A Final Four.
The Tigers are led by 6-foot-8 senior forward Langston Hackworth, 6-foot-1 senior guard Javion Davis, and 6-foot-3 senior guard King Sanders.
On the other side, The Villages Charter returns to the Final Four for the fourth consecutive season and is still eyeing their elusive first state championship in boys’ basketball in school history. After coming up short in the Class 3A championship game against Calvary Christian Academy last season, the Buffalo are destined to return to the championship game once again this season.
The Villages Charter (23-7) comes into the Final Four riding a 9-game winning streak, dating back to January 24, when they lost to 7A regional finalist Coral Glades in the Iverson Classic. The Buffalo are led this season by 6-foot-2 junior guard Aaron Britt Jr, 6-foot-8 junior small forward Jomar Bernard, 6-foot-8 senior forward Herly Brutus (LSU signee), and 6-foot-6 senior guard Ethan Bevis (Air Force signee).
