PLAYERS FEATURED
On The Radar took over Gwinnett County with Summer Jam. Rife with talent, the younger age groups featured plenty of talented players who’ll be featured in stories like this for the next few years. Here’s who stood out in the 15U division:
Amare Medhin – AOT EYBL – Redan (Pictured) - 2029
If they aren’t already, expect D-I programs to start tracking Amare very soon. The Class 2A Freshman of the Year and Best Scorer award winner was unstoppable in a 74-48 win over Everything Earned Elite before an ankle injury cut his day short. Medhin dumped in 24 points on five threes finishing with 24 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks. The long guard has deep three-point range, loving to pull from over high ball screens. He lulled defenders to sleep with how he walked the ball up the floor, finding his spots well beyond the line. Amare has an effortless release and a nonchalant cool feel to his game. As well as he scored the ball, it never felt as if anything was forced. Medhin let the game come to him as he still managed to distribute. While his three-point shot shined, Amare did more than just score with his jumper. He showed explosiveness downhill using short shifty hesitation moves to get to the rack where he finished with slams. Medhin is one of the brightest young scorers in the state.
Cannon Combs – AOT EYBL – Gardendale, AL - 2029
A dual sport star who also serves as an ace on the mound, Cannon’s fastball on the hardwood struck out any defender’s chance of slowing him down as he recorded 13 points, 4 rebounds and 1 assist in a win. Combs is a highly skilled inside-out forward. He’s got a great drop step inside, a quick powerful spin. Cannon scored through contact with both hands. He did a nice job finding mismatches and communicated throughout on both ends of the floor. When he isn’t punishing smaller players inside, Cannon is able to launch from beyond the arc as a stretch-forward. He nailed a corner three against Everything Earned Elite. There is a lot to like about Combs’ game. Already with great polish, if he continues to improve he should cement himself as one of the best bigs in the Southeast.
Kingston Allen – Everything Earned Elite OTR – Northside-Warner Robins - 2029
Allen is a streaky shooter who can take over games when he is hot. During stretches of their loss against AOT, Kingston crowned defenders with his sweet stroke. He drilled a pair of threes and had some slippery drives to the basket, finishing with scoop layups and step-through floaters. Allen loves to shoot on the perimeter, especially from the right wing. His natural scoring ability should lead to plenty of buckets at Northside. The high-volume shooter tallied 18 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks.
Damon Flint – Everything Earned Elite OTR – Cedar Shoals - 2029
Flint is wired to score, a hyper aggressive attacker who has a knack for breaking his man down off the dribble. While the ball can stick at times, when Damon finds the right dribble combo to get past his initial defender he is a gifted finisher in traffic, adept at scoring through bumps. His best offense comes in the paint on drives but Damon is able to mix in just enough outside shooter to keep defenders honest. If his range grows to the three-point line with consistency, watch out. Flint had 12 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist and 4 steals against AOT.
Amari Davis – Garner Road National - 2029
A dynamic multisport standout, Davis was instrumental in a 60-56 win over Team Bo Bell, dropping in 21 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 block. Davis cashed in on four threes off the catch. He used his sharp agility to penetrate for floaters. Amari’s hustle earned rebounds and 50/50 balls. I appreciated his ability to do the little things well like holding box outs.
Sam Cann – Garner Road National - 2029
The sharpshooting of Cann got Garner Road off to a hot start, leading Team Bo Bell by 18 at the break. Sam drilled four threes and was smooth off the dribble as he gathered in traffic for crafty layups. His passing off the bounce can’t be overlooked as he was able to hang in the air to find open teammates. Cann finished with 21 points, 2 rebounds and 3 steals.
Austin Thigpen – Garner Road National - 2029
Omnipresent, Thigpen was everywhere as the high-energy guard orchestrated the Garner Road offense without having to score much himself. Thigpen’s nose for the ball led to 3 points, 18 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 steal. He snatched rebounds and pushed coast-to-coast. What I liked most about Thigpen aside from his elite rebounding was his consistent willingness to make the extra pass to get shooters wide open looks.
Dylan Johnson – Team Bo Bell – Sandy Creek - 2029
Johnson flipped a switch in the second half, leading a furious comeback which ultimately fell short, rallying Team Bo Bell from down 44-26 at the half against Garner Road before running out of time, losing 60-56. Dylan was shot out of a cannon. He used his aggressiveness and athleticism to serve as a heat seeking missile as he got to the rim at will. His ability to blow by defenders ignited Bo Bell. Johnson found points at all levels, hitting pull-up jumpers from the mid-range and draining three three-pointers. Dylan contributed 22 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. His takeover refuse-to-lose mindset is exciting.
