The Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) girls’ basketball state championships tip off this week at UNF Arena on the campus of the University of North Florida. We will be headlining all eight classifications over the course of the next couple of weeks with notable players to watch.
Alyssa Hallman - Hilliard - 2026
The Belmont Abbey signee is one of the top-skilled shooters in the state when it comes to shooting from the perimeter. With her college-ready frame, she can get off a smooth release off the catch as well as the bounce at a high percentage. On the defensive end, she plays with a ton of versatility, whether it’s altering shots at the rim, blocking shots, or being active in the passing lanes. Hallman leads the team in points, rebounds, and blocks, where her effectiveness could help lead her team to its first state title in school history.
Charlee Matos - Hilliard - 2029
Matos has a mature game that goes well beyond her years on the offensive end, where she put up a career-high in scoring average, where she averages nearly 13 points per game. Her experience playing three years at the varsity level has Bonafide her into a huge role this season, where she is the lead guard. On the defensive end, she is unafraid when it comes to guarding bigger players as well as being effective when playing in the passing lanes. Her combination skillset of three-level scoring, versatile defending, and creating for her teammates is a key component of why the Red Flashes are back in the Final Four for a second consecutive season.
Janiyah Span - Williston - 2029
The 5-foot-8 small forward has continued to put up efficient numbers this postseason, averaging 21.0 points per game in three games played. On the offensive end, she is tough and physical, where she can finish at the front of the rim as well as stop on a dime, shooting in the mid-range. Her overall confidence has provided a huge boost for her team this postseason, where she can guard multiple positions using her length and athleticism. As just a freshman, Span is second on her team in both scoring and rebounding this season. Expect Span to be a name people start keeping on their radar over the course of the next three seasons, including this upcoming Grassroots season, where she will play for Tre Mann Elite.
Cyianna Smith - Blountstown - 2027
The 5-foot-11 junior small forward has had a stellar postseason, where she is averaging 16 points per game in two games played. Her overall skillset on the offensive end doesn’t just happen with her scoring, but she plays with a knack for unselfishness, where she gets her teammates involved in nearly every possession. Her energy and efforts on the defensive end have been a huge boost for her team this postseason, where she was active on the glass as well as in the passing lanes. In the regional final win over Malone, Smith recorded 20 points, five rebounds, four steals, and three blocks.
Ashlyn Young - Williston - 2026
Young continues to be a capable point guard who makes strong decisions when she has the basketball in her hands. Her leadership on the floor is what separates her from the rest of the guards in the class. Young led the team this season in points, assists, and steals per game this season as her quickness and length continue to be a huge factor in her overall game. She is a consistent guard who can play on and off the ball at a high level, get to her spots on the offensive end, and is unafraid when it comes to absorbing contact finishing at the rim. Young could make an immediate impact in this Final Four run, where the Red Devils stand two wins away from their first state championship in program history.
